2024 Vehicle

General

2023 marks UMBC Racing's 19th entry in the Baja SAE racing series. We designed the car to utilize a chain driven 4WD system marking the second iteration of our 4WD system.

For suspension, shorter travel shocks were implemented to prevent drivetrain interference. Softer springs were used to aide in jump performance.

Drivetrain

Drastic changes were made to our gearbox to improve reliability. This year our front wheels were powered by a chain drive system going to a front differential.

Steering

Our main goal for steering was to maintain the turn radius and improve steering response. Continuing from the previous design, the steering rack was mounted farther forward in order to mount the tie rod to the front of the portal box.

Brakes

Brakes were designed to reduce the force required for the driver to lock the brakes. As a result the pedal ratio was increased and a bias bar was implemented to provide equal pressure to the front and rear. New brake rotors were also implemented to decrease weight and improve heat dissipation.
